Naimur called up for camp

Off-spinner Naimur Rahman got a surprise call-up when the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) selected a 22-member preliminary squad for the upcoming Pakistan tour.

Besides the former national skipper, middle-order batsman Rajin Saleh and right-arm pacer Alamgir Kabir were the other inclusions in the list.

All seventeen players who toured Australia along with reserve opener Shahriar Hossain will attend the brief camp that begins today at the Bangabandhu National Stadium under the supervision of coach Dav Whatmore.

Back after spending 45 days down under, the national players hardly got three days rest before being asked to report for five days of training. The team will fly to Pakistan on August 16.

For Naimur, who refused to play in April's home series against South Africa, it is going to be a chance to redeem himself after showing the

cold shoulder to former chief selector Aliul Islam.

Rajin and Alamgir were rewarded for their impressive performances

for the Bangladesh Under-23 team which toured Sri Lanka in June.

Pacer Alamgir played only one Test against Sri Lanka in July last year.

Another notable name is Mushfiqur Rahman. The all-rounder was a regular choice in most preliminary lists until missing the trip to Australia.

While some players have benefited from being given a second chance, others may feel aggrieved because they missed out.

Opener Moniruzzaman Moni, off-spinner Fahim Muntasir and wicketkeeper Mohammad Salim were axed from the probables even though Whatmore assured each of them before going to Australia that all reserve players would get a chance to take part in the next tour camp.

About Naimur's call-up, who last played international cricket against West Indies late last year before being dumped both as skipper and a player, a selector told The Daily Star Sport yesterday that Whatmore might consider him a better choice than Fahim Muntasir in Pakistan.

The selector on condition of anonymity, said the newly-formed panel Would be meeting tomorrow to finalise the 14-member squad for the Pakistan tour.

"We are thinking of selecting two separate teams for the three Tests and five one-day internationals against Pakistan but everything will be decided after the August 13 meeting," he said.

The players have been asked to report to Whatmore today at 9am at the BCB's Stadium office.

The selected players are: Javed Omar, Hannan Sarker, Shahriar Hossain, Habibul Bashar, Sanwar Hossain, Al-Shahriar, Rajin Saleh, Mohammad Ashraful, Alok Kapali, Khaled Mahmud, Khaled Mashud, Naimur Rahman, Tushar Imran, Mohammad Rafique, Manjurul Islam, Mashrafee-bin-Mortuza, Tapas Baishya, Hasibul Hossain, Tareq Aziz Khan, Mushfiqur Rahman, Anwar Hossain Munir and Alamgir Kabir.
