Dr Mazharul Islam dead

Eminent intellectual and former Vice- chancellor of Rajshahi University Dr Mazharul Islam died at a hospital in Bangkok yesterday morning.

He had also served as Director General of Bangla Academy.

Dr Islam, who had been suffering from old-age ailments and pneumonia for nearly two months, was admitted to a hospital in the Thai capital last month.

He left behind his wife, two sons, two daughters and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death.

Various sociopolitical organisations expressed their shock at the death of Dr Mazharul Islam.

Awami League President and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Sheikh Hasina expressed her deep shock at the death of Dr Islam.

In her condolence message Hasina said, "His death left a vacuum in the educational and cultural fields and country and the nation suffered an irreparable loss".

She prayed for salvation of his departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family members.

Bangladesh Awami League Sechchhasebak League and Bangladesh Centre for Folklore Studies also condoled the death of Dr Mazharul Islam.
