Mob kills two robbers on Dhaka-Sylhet highway


A mob killed two alleged highway robbers and injured eight others on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Bhiti Morjal in Raipur yesterday.

Police said a gang of about 12 robbers boarded a Dhaka-bound bus from Brahmanbaria in guise of passengers. They looted over Tk 1 lakh in cash and valuables when the vehicle neared Mahmudabad bridge at about 8:00am.

"The passengers cried out for help when the robbers were decamping at Bhiti Morjal. Locals rushed to the spot and caught 10 of the robbers," said an eyewitness.

The mob beat up the robbers, leaving Monir Hossain, 30, and another unidentified dead on the spot.

Raipura police sent the injured -- Oliul Islam, 20, Saiful Islam, 26, Sharifuddin, 30, Jamal, 25, Rafiq, 25, Mojibor Rahman, 29, Harun, 28, and Faruque, 25 -- to Narsingdi General Hospital and Raipura Health Complex.

Police also recovered Tk 40,000, four mobile phone sets, four wristwatches and two knives.
