Netrakona AL, Jubo League dissolved amid in-fighting
Convening committee formed for Jan 22 council

Following years of intra-party conflict, district committees of Netrakona Awami League and its youth front Jubo League have been dissolved.

The district committees have been dissolved ahead of the district AL council, scheduled for January 22. The council was earlier scheduled for January 9.

Party council was not held since 1997 due to internal conflict.

Letters from the central AL office dissolving the bodies reached the district party offices on Thursday, party sources said here yesterday.

A seven-member AL convening committee headed by Abu Siddiq Ahmed as convener and Bhojon Sarker as joint convener has been formed, according to the letter sent from the central AL.

The convening committee of the district Jubo League has not yet been formed.

Netrakona district AL is divided into two factions, one led by ex-MP and former district president of the party Fazlur Rahaman Khan and the other led by its former vice-president Samsujjoha.

Former join secretary advocate Jinnatul Islam and organising secretary Tafsir Uddin Ahamed are with Fazlur Rahaman Khana, the sources said.

Former lawmaker Jalal Uddin Talukder, vice-president advocate Sadiruddin, joint secretary Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru belong to the Samsujjoha -led faction.

The conflict surfaced after the last general election as Shamsujoha opposed Fazlur Rahaman in getting party nomination. As a result, AL Presidium member Abdul Momin got nomination and was elected.

The intra-party conflict took a new turn when the January 9 council date was announced.

Meantime, two rival panels have been declared for contesting for party posts in the council.

One of the panels is led by Fazlur Rahaman Khan and Tafsiruddin Ahamed and the other by Samsujjoha and Ashraf Ali Khan.

The two factions take part in organisational activities separately. This has caused frustration among workers at grassroots level and is hampering organisational activities, the sources said.

When contacted, Fazlur Rahaman Khan claimed that the Samsujjoha faction is backed by BNP.

Samsujjoha refuted the allegation. "I have no link with BNP", he said.

"I am running party activities in the district in an well organised way and I do not like grouping".

The sources said party leader and lawmaker from Netrokona Abdul Momin does not belong to any group and he did not visit Netrakona since the last election.
