25 decisions on jail reform implemented


The government implemented 25 decisions of the cabinet committee on jail reform in one and a half years and another 23 are on the cards.

A home ministry official said that authorities built annexes to jails in Narayanganj, Munshi- ganj, Satkhira, Rajbari, Naogaon, Moulvibazar and Chittagong.

The new jails, built at a cost of Tk 190 crore, will accommodate more than 2,500 inmates, the 10th meeting of the cabinet committee on jail reform was told last week.

Law Minister Moudud Ahmed presided over the meeting, also attended by Health Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Telecommunications Minister Aminul Haque, former home minister Altaf Hossain Choudhury, Cabinet Secretary Sadat Hussain and home, social welfare and law secretaries.

The meeting over, Moudud told journalists the government provided 8,208 inmates with legal assistance last year and a day care centre for children was set up in Dhaka Central Jail.

The government set up six safe housing centres for women inmates and their children in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Jessore, Khulna, Sylhet and Chittagong.

For treatment of women inmates in Dhaka Central Jail, the government decided to appoint 10 female doctors and as many nurses. Inmates of different jails have also been provided with television and electric fans.
