French Embassy "informed and following" arrest of journo

French Embassy here in Dhaka said it is "informed" of the arrest of French journalist Monda Jerome and that it is "following" the proceedings.

"We are informed and we are following this," a French Embassy spokesperson told yesterday.

The French journalist along with his Indian guide was detained by the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) at Satkhira's Bhomra check point Thursday night as he re-entered the country after staying illegally for 43 days in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. He did not have visa for India.

Monda Jerome was sent to the Dhaka Special Branch for interrogation and a case was filed in Satkhira.
