DU senate polls today

The election of 35 teachers' representatives to the Dhaka University Senate, the highest policy-making body of DU, will be held today.

Two panels -- ruling BNP- and Jamaat-e-Islami-backed 'White Panel' and pro-Awami League 'Blue Panel' -- are contesting the polls. Left-leaning 'Pink Panel' is not taking part in the election separately. Its candidates are contesting the polls under the banner of Blue Panel.

The election is being held about a year after the expiry of the tenure of the senate.

DU Treasurer Prof Syed Rashidul Hasan will conduct the election as election commissioner. A total of 1,100 teachers are likely to cast their votes at the election to be held at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) from 9:00am to 1:00pm.

Meanwhile, teachers belonging to both the groups were busy with their last moment door-to-door campaign yesterday, trying desperately to persuade the voters to support them in the election.

Blue panel candidates are approaching the teachers with pledges to restore the spirit of the liberation war, check irregularities in appointment and resist harassment of teachers and others.

On the other hand, the White Panel have pledged to provide better residence facilities for the teachers, improve computer facilities and expand scopes for scholarships for higher education.
