Police arrested seven suspected Islamist militants near a mosque on the outskirts of Dinajpur town on Thursday night.
They were, however, freed yesterday noon, as local Jamaat Ameer Aftabuddin Molla told police that they were the activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami.
He said the ICS activists were walking on the premises of a mosque in the area after offering Esha prayers.
Acting on a tip-off, police raided Block no 7 and nabbed Abdur Shukur, Shohag, Ariful, Foysal, Ariful Islam Milan, Alal and Anjurul when they were roaming the area.
When contacted, Police Superintendent Delwar Hossain Mian said the arrestees were released from the custody of Dinajpur Sadar Police Station on an assurance given by the Jamaat leader that the Shibir activists will not loiter or move in the area at night.
Locals told The Daily Star that the activists of different Islamist militant organisations, including Jama'atul Mujahideen, hold secret meetings in different mosques in the area at night.
They stay in messes and houses in the area under the patronisation of the Jamaat-e-Islami, locals said.
