Sanitation Month begins tomorrow

To ensure sanitation facility for all by the year 2010, the government has undertaken various steps, including distribution of free sanitary latrines among the poor and making them affordable for all.

Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan said this at a press conference organised on the eve of 'Sanitation Month' at the secretariat yesterday.

Like every year, the month of October this year will be observed as sanitation month. The evaluation of sanitation activities of the past and planning for the future are the main objectives of the programme.

"For ensuring sanitary latrines for all, a Tk 267 crore National Sanitation Project is being implemented in phases through Public Health Engineering Department," he said.

He said "The purposes of the project are to supply sanitary latrines free of cost among the poor and to make such latrines easily available to the people at affordable cost."
