Students threaten Dhaka-Aricha highway blockade


Students of Government Devendra College threatened the Dhaka-Aricha highway blockade for indefinite period from Saturday if their demand for 50 per cent discount in bus fare is not met immediately.

They also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) in this regard.

Hundreds of student under the banner of All Party Student Alliance in a procession marched the main streets of the town in support of their demand.

The police intercepted the procession as it tried to proceed towards Manikganj bus stand to hold a rally. Later, they held the rally in front of the DC's office premises.

Awlad Hossain, Jobaidur Rahman Rubel, Shaheenul Islam Tarek, Shafikul Islam Jasim, Zinnah Khan, Kamrul Hasan Suman, Selim Hossain, Mamunur Rashid, Wazed Ali and Asif Khan, among others, addressed the rally.

They said of 4500 students, about 3000 use buses and they are often harassed by the conductors. They demanded 50 per cent discount in bus fare for the college students as most of them are poor and meritorious.
