Hunt for young talents
Scientists join math fair in Moulvibazar


School students in a remote area in the district enjoyed an exceptional programme on science and technology. They were enthralled by the company of prominent scientists.

The day-long science fair and quiz competition on mathematics was held at Kanihati High School in Hazipur union of Kulaura upazila on Saturday.

The theme of the programme was "science for all".

Hafiza Khatun Memorial Trust and Kanihati High School jointly organised the programme in cooperation with Bangladesh Bigyan Janapriya Karan Committee (Committee to Popularise Science).

Prominent scientist Dr Abed Chowdhury attended the programme as chief guest while General Secretary of Bangladesh Bigyan Janapriya Karan Samity Dr. Munir Hasan and Headmaster of Kanihati High School Md. Khurshed Ali were present as special guests.

Over 100 students from different schools in the area participated in the written quiz competition on mathematics, held in the morning.

The inaugural session was presided over by President of the school managing committee and former Union Parishad chairman Abdul Quddus Chowdhury.

It was a lively session when the students replied to questions by Dr Munir Hasan on history and Dr. Abed Chowdhury replied to questions from students on science and research.

At the discussion session, Dr. Abed Chowdhury, who returned home from abroad recently, said he is on talent hunt in rural area of Bangladesh. He was inspired by his late mother Hafiza Khatun Chowdhury, he said.

The institutions which participated in the programme included Kanihati High School, Shamsernagar AATM High School, Ali Amzad High School, Hazipur Girls High School, Nayabazar KC High School and Bhukshimoil High School.

Crests and certificates were distributed among 20 participants for their

good performances. Sultana Begum of Kanihati High School got the best performer's award.

Well decorated stalls displaying items, books and publications on physics, chemistry, mathematics, zoology, mobile phone and computer were added attractions at the science fair.

At the closing ceremony, Dr. Munir Hasan announced that a similar programme will be held at Ali Amzad High School next year.
