Manikganj-4 by-polls today

By-election in Manikganj-4 constituency, having 2,03,927 voters, will be held today.

Adequate measures have been taken to ensure a free and fair election in all the 93 poll centres of the constituency, said the district election officer. However a few candidates claim 53 poll centres are vulnerable to vote rigging.

SM Shamser Zakaria, deputy commissioner of Manikganj, told The Daily Star 131 magistrates, 1428 policemen, 150 armoured battalion men, 175 army personnel, 160 BDR men and 1116 ansars have been deployed to maintain law and order during the election.

Mobile teams will patrol the entire election area to combat any untoward incident, he said.

Seven candidates are running for the office. They are four-party candidate Engineer Mainul Islam Khan, also son of the late Shamsul Islam Khan MP, (Paddy Sheaf), Civil Society candidate Mushfuqur Rahman Khan (Wall Clock), Independent candidates Golam Sarwar Milon (Football), Khalilur Rahman (Spectacles), Sirajul Islam (Hukka), independent candidate Moazzem Hossaqn Tusar (Cup-saucer) and Krisak Sramik Mukti Andolan President Krisak Mohammed Sadek (Rooster). The Awami League led 14-party is not contesting the election.

With the death of former Industries Minister Shamsul Islam Khan MP on January 22 this year the parliament seat fell vacant.
