World Telecom Day today

The 38th World Telecommunications Day will be observed in the country today along with 189 other member countries of International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

"Promoting Global Cyber-Security" is the theme of this year's World Telecommunications Day.

On the occasion, President Iajuddin Ahmed, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and ITU Secretary General Yoshio Utsumi gave separate messages.

In his message, Iajuddin said more and more people around the globe are now using ICT in their day-to-day life as it has enormous potentials in socio-economic development.

Terming the theme of the Day as very relevant and timely in the present global context, Khaleda expressed the hope that the members of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) would make all out efforts to ensure a secure cyber world for all.

The UN Secretary General, in his message, urged all member states and stakeholders to help raise global awareness of cyber security, and develop an international network of initiatives and ICT-based counter measures to enhance security and build trust in the use of information and communication technologies.

To mark the day, a seminar will be held at China-Bangladesh Friendship Centre with Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman as chief guest.

Engr SM Munir Ahmed will present the keynote paper on the theme of the day.

BTV and Bangladesh Betar will air special programmes highlighting various aspects of the day while newspapers will publish supplements.

BCS (Telecom) Samity will publish a special issue of "Teletech" journal on the occasion.
