Highway blocked as MP Ilyas Ali's house attacked

Activists of Osmaninagar and Balaganj upazila BNP and its front organisations barricaded the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway at several places yesterday, protesting an attack on ruling party lawmaker M Ilyas Ali's residence in the city on Wednesday night.

Some members of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) loyal to Ariful Haque Chowdhury, who is said to enjoy blessings from Finance Minister Saifur Rahman, pelted brickbats at Ilyas' house on Wednesday night.

Ilyas' men locked in clashes with the followers of Ariful, Sylhet city BNP chief. Ten persons were injured in the clashes.

Ilyas, also Sylhet district BNP convener who is said to be in the rival camp with two other ruling party lawmakers from the district, was not in the house at that time.

Some 300 activists loyal to Ilyas put roadblocks at Sherpur yesterday morning. Around 400 vehicles got stranded on both sides of the highway for three hours until some senior party leaders cleared the road at 11:00am.

At 3:30pm, JCD members put another barricade on the highway at Tajpurbazar under Osmaninagar Police Station for an hour.

Later, the ruling party men again barricaded the highway at Kuruabazar, Begumpur and Sherpur.

Around 100 JCD supporters of Ilyas gathered at a community centre in the city's Zindabazar area at 3:00pm yesterday to bring out a protest procession.

Arif's men also gathered at Zindabazar but police restrained both the groups.

Meanwhile, seven ward commissioners of Sylhet City Corporation in a joint statement condemned Wednesday night's attack on Ilyas' residence and demanded immediate arrest of those responsible.
