Attack on Landless in Satkhira
One dies, 2 fighting for life

An elderly landless man died here yesterday afternoon while two others are fighting for life at a local hospital following their abduction and torture by miscreants at Bairagirchak in Kaliganj upazila Friday night.

Abul Hossain Sardar, 60, of Chingrikhali in Kaligonj upazila died at Satkhira hospital. The condition of Fazlur Rahman, 48 and Khokon, 43, is critical, said the resident medical officer (RMO) of the hospital, Dr Ishaque.

The three were evicted by miscreants from government land on April 15.

The criminals, identifying as members of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), abducted the three from a bus at Indranagar intersection on Nalta-Bairagirchak Road at about 8 pm. The abductors were led by Hasan Mir, Ohab Ali Piyada, Halim, Shahidul Golam and Nur Islam, victims said. Later, they were beaten with iron rods.

Police rescued them from the spot and admitted them to the hospital.

On contact, Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in- Charge (OC) Ansar Ali confirmed the incident saying action will be taken against the miscreants after filing of cases. The victims' relatives are reportedly taking preparation to file cases with Kaliganj police.

A tense situation is prevailing in the area. Local people feared, a bloody clash may erupt any moment.

Meanwhile, the Landless Eviction Resistance Action Coordination Committee, in a statement yesterday, condemned the incident demanding arrested and punishment to the killers.

A protest meeting will be held at Shaheed Abdur Razzaque Park today which will be followed by a procession.
