Minister Khurshid Zahan Haque passes away

Women and Children Affairs Minister Khurshid Zahan Haque died at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in the city at 10:50am yesterday. She was 67.

Receiving the death news of her elder sister, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia rushed to the CMH at about 12:30pm. Acting President Jamiruddin Sircar also went to the CMH at about 12:45pm to see the body of Khurshid Zahan.

Party sources said the body of Khurshid Zahan was taken to the BNP central office at Naya Paltan at noon and her first namaj-e-janaza was held there at about 2:00pm. Her second janaza was held at South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad at about 2:45pm.

Acting Speaker Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui, chief whip, deputy leader of the opposition, ministers, MPs, diplomats and employees of the parliament attended the janaza.

Prime Minister and Leader of the Parliament Khaleda Zia, Acting Speaker Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui and Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan placed wreaths on the coffin. Deputy Leader of the Opposition Abdul Hamid placed wreath on the coffin on behalf of the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Sheikh Hasina.

Khurshid Zahan Haque was born at south Balubari in Dinajpur town on August 11, 1939.

She passed matriculation from Dinajpur in 1954 and obtained BA degree from Tangail Kumudini College in 1958. She was the general secretary of Kumudini College Students' Union from 1956-57.

She was nominated as member of parliament to a women reserved seat in 1991. Later, she was elected MP from Dinajpur-3 constituency in 1996 and 2001.

Khurshid Zahan Haque was also involved with a number of social welfare organisations and played a significant role in the country's socioeconomic development.

Our Dinajpur correspondent reported that Khurshid Zahan Haque was laid to rest beside her father's grave at Faridpur graveyard in Dinajpur town last night.

Her namaj-e-Janaza was held at Dinajpur Gora Shahid Maidan after Magrib prayers. Thousand of people, including the leaders and workers of the ruling BNP and other political parties, took part in the janaza.

Earlier, an aircraft of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, carrying the body of the minister, arrived at Saidpur Airport. Later, the body was brought to the district town by an army ambulance.
