Manipuri people observe language martyrs day

'Vishnupuria Language Martyrs Day' of the indigenous Manipuri community was observed at Tilakpur and Madhabpur villages, an area inhabited by Manipuri people in Kamalganj upazila in Moulvibazar district on Friday.

In Tilakpur, 'Pouri' - a Monipuri socio-cultural organisation organised a day-long programme to observe the day. The programme included placing of wreaths at local Shaheed Minar, rally, discussion meeting and poetry recitation. The discussion meeting was presided over by 'Pouri' president Moni Singha and addressed by, among others, Monipuri language litterateur and prominent writer Prof Ranjit Kumar Singha, Editor of local weekly Chaer Desh Gopal Deb Choudhury, college teacher Abinash Acharya and poet Pulok Kanti Dhar.

The day is being observed to commemorate killing of a Monipuri college girl --Shudeshna Sinha --in police firing at Karimganj in Assam on March 16, 1956 during movement for Monipuri language.
