Karunamoyee Sarder Murder Case
12 get life in Khulna


A Khulna court yesterday sentenced 12 people to life imprisonment in the sensational Karunamoyee Sarder murder case.

District and Sessions Judge AKM Ishtiaque Hossain handed down the verdict to Surman Morol, Abul Kashem, Abdul Hye Gazi, Hakim Shaikh, Pabitra Biswas, Nailakkha Baidda, Md Faruque, Barek member, Jiad Sarder, Pradip Kumar, Liaquat Sarder and Bhaba Ranjan Roy. Of them, Pabitra Biswas was tried in absentia.

The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each. If they fail to pay, they will have to suffer one more year's rigorous imprisonment.

The court also sentenced the first eight convicts to seven years' rigorous imprisonment in another case under Explosive Substances Act.

According to the prosecution, Karunamoyee Sarder was gunned down and 40 others were injured on November 7 in 1990 during an agitation against land grabbers at Paikgachha in Khulna.

Cadres of shrimp exporter Wazed Ali Biswas launched the armed attack on the procession of landless people.

A case was lodged with Paikgachha police in this connection.

OC Md Shahabuddin of Paikgachha Police Station who investigated the case submitted charge sheet on December 16, 1990 against 35 people. Later, the case was transferred to CID for further investigation. Inspector Mosleuddin of CID submitted charge sheet on January 8 in 1994 naming 18 people as accused.

Trial of the murder case began on January 1 in 2004 and charges were framed on June 22 of the same year.
