Ex-BNP MP Munshi's wife sent to jail

Detained ex-BNP lawmaker Manjurul Ahsan Munshi's wife, Mazeda Ahsan Munshi, was sent to jail yesterday in a graft case against Munshi's family when she surrendered to a special court trying high-profile corruption suspects.

Mazeda, accused in the graft case along with her husband and two sons, surrendered to the makeshift court after her bail expired.

The court of Judge M Ashraf Hossain, rejecting her bail prayer, ordered her to jail.

However, the court deferred the charge hearing of the case by a day to today [Monday].

Their two sons--Barrister Rizviul Ahsan Munshi and Rezwanul Ahsan Munshi--who are also facing the graft charge along with their parents, were on bail but failed to turn up yesterday to stand trial.

On March 27, the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case with Gulshan Police Station against them in connection with submitting "false" statement of wealth to the watchdog.

On June 27, the ACC, after investigation, submitted the charge sheet to the court accusing them of amassing wealth worth over Tk 5.37 crore by "illegal means".

Meanwhile, the proceedings of the graft cases faced by former minister and front- ranking leader of Awami League Mohammad Nasim and T&T CBA leader (dismissed) Firoze Mian along with his wife were stalled, as the ACC failed to produce its witness before the court.

The hearings were adjourned until July 12.
