Alleged Harassment of Girl

100 injured in B’baria clash

At least 100 people, including four policemen, were injured in a clash between residents of two villages under Brahmanbaria’s Sarail upazila yesterday centring the alleged harassment of a girl of class X.
Riot police from Brahmanbaria Police Lines, called in after local police failed to bring the situation under control, fired 160 shotgun rounds and 44 teargas shells to disperse the villagers and end the nearly three-hour-long clash around 1:00pm.
Police arrested 12 people from the spot while the injured policemen were admitted to Sarail Upazila Health Complex.
Of the injured, one Rafiqul Islam, who received bullet wounds, and 21 others were sent to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital while the remaining received first aid at the health complex and local clinics.
Eyewitnesses and police said a youth of Uchliapara village had engaged in an altercation with another from Sayedtula village on Thursday night after the latter allegedly harassed the former’s sister.
The youths and their supporters engaged in clashes in and around the two villages from around 10:00am. Their relatives, armed with sharp weapons, followed suit, said the eyewitnesses.
