20 rescued from brick kiln, owner arrested

Rab arrested a brick kiln owner in Chowgacha upazila in Jessore on Monday evening on charge of torturing 20 workers by confining them in the last eight days.
Women and children were among the workers.
The arrestee was identified as Abdul Halim, owner of HSB Brick Kiln and a resident of Isapur village in the upazila.
Sources said, Sahadat Morol, a resident of Khariati village in Ashashuni upazila of Satkhira district, earlier on Monday lodged an allegation with Rab-6 Jessore camp that 20 people, including his maternal cousin Matiar Gazi, went to work at the kiln at Patibila Nimtala on a contract basis for six months.
The tenure of the contract ended on April 13, but the owner aided by his brother Abdus Selim, refused to release them and confined the workers to a godown and tortured them for the last eight days.
Sometimes, they were forced to work in starved condition, said Sahadat, adding that, the owner even warned of killing them if they refused to work.
Receiving the allegation, the elite force rescued the workers and arrested the brick kiln owner.
During interrogation, the arrested owner confessed to confining the workers.
A case was filed in this connection.
