Bangladeshi IT company to provide biometric identity management solution for Bhutan

Tiger IT Bangladesh Ltd has signed a contract with the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs in Bhutan to provide its automated fingerprint identification system TigerAFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) to implement a biometric identity management system for the Department of Civil Registration and Census (DCRC) and the Department of Immigration.

The same biometric system backbone will be used in government agencies as well.

Tiger IT won the contract as the most compliant lowest bidder, competing against established vendors such as Sagem, NEC, IRIS and eDruk in an open international tender.

The NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) certified TigerAFIS will be used to prevent identity fraud, impersonation and forgery. The system will hold three million individuals’ records at the first stage.

In addition to TigerAFIS, Tiger IT will provide printing and personalisation solutions along with 5, 00,000 identity cards.

Ziaur Rahman, chairman and chief executive officer of Tiger IT said, “We are delighted to work with the Government of Bhutan – a country with one of the most clear technology visions in the South Asian region.”

Tiger IT is a leading software company in Bangladesh pioneering in biometrics and is a world leader in AFIS. Only a few highly specialised companies worldwide develop biometric matching systems certified by NIST. This makes Bangladesh one of the best producers and exporters of AFIS.

Tiger IT has recently won similar projects in Nepal and India. The company provided the software solution for Machine Readable Passports in Nepal. In India, the company provided TigerAFIS for the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Under this project 300 million people below poverty line will receive a biometric based smart card for medical care under a free health insurance scheme.
