Dhaka sees slack shutdown

The last day of the two-day hartal (shutdown) is progressing in the capital without any major incident of violence on Thursday.

The BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance called the hartal to protest the killings during and after Hefajat-e Islam’s Dhaka siege programme on Sunday.

The two-day shutdown will end at 6:00pm Thursday.

Motorised vehicles like buses, cars and CNG were seen to be plying on the streets as usual, though no inter-city buses took off from the Mohakhali and Gabtoli bus terminals.

Pro-hartal activists brought out brisk processions on Majar Road in Mirpur, who were quickly dispersed by law enforcers patrolling the area, reported Bangla daily The Prothom Alo.

A huge contingent of law enforcers have been deployed at all the key points of the capital to maintain law and order during hartal hours.
