Ex-govt official gets 25-year jail term for corruption in Ctg

A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced a suspended government official to 25-year imprisonment for misappropriating state money, forging government documents, corruption, deception and misuse of power.
Chittagong Divisional Special Court Judge Ataur Rahman gave the verdict in absentia of the convict, Abdul Mannan Gazi, a former divisional accountant of the Housing and Public Works E/M Department-2 in Chittagong.
The court also fined him Tk 2,000 in default of which he will have to serve six more months in prison.
The court gave him five-year terms for each charge that will be executed simultaneously, said ACC Prosecutor Mahmudul Haq Mahmud.
According to the case document, Mannan misappropriated Tk 1.7 lakh money from different projects of the department by forging government receipts from August 10, 2000 to September 5, 2000.
On September 26, 2001, then ACC Assistant Director Mozammel Haq lodged a case with Double Mooring Police Station against Mannan.
On September 28, 2008, the charge sheet was submitted, and the court framed charges on July 26, 2010.
