Fire destroys betel on 70 bighas, this time in Natore

A devastating fire destroyed 40 betel leaf gardens on around 70 bighas of land at Akpurulia village in Gurudaspur upazila of the district yesterday morning, causing damage worth about Tk 1.5 crore.
“I saw smoke at a betel leaf garden at around 11:00am. The fire spread fast and gutted more than 40 betel gardens,” said Abul Kashem, an elderly resident of the village.
On information, fire fighters from Gurudaspur upazila headquarters reached the spot. They with the help of locals brought the blaze under control at around 1:00pm.
Abul Kalam, Abul Kashem, Abdus Sattar, Shariful Islam, Samad Fakir, Majed Ali are among the worst victims of the fire that destroyed the betel gardens of 50 people.
The affected owners estimated the loss caused by the fire at around Tk 1.5 crore. Golam Mastofa, in-charge of Gurudaspur Fire Service Station, said the fire might have originated from the butt of a cigarette.
Earlier on Friday, betel leaves on around 90 bighas of land were gutted in a fire at Patuakandi village in Bheramara upazila of Kushtia.
Locals said the fire originated from the garden of one Akhter of the village around 4:00pm and soon engulfed the adjacent gardens. The affected farmers estimated the loss at Tk 1crore.
Fire fighting units from Bheramara and Daulatpur upazilas rushed to the village and extinguished the blaze. Mohammad Rajibul Islam of Bheramara Fire Service Station told this correspondent that the fire might have originated from the butt of a cigarette.
