Attack on Noakhali Hindus

Identify perpetrators

Nagorik Protinidhi Dal urges govt

Members of Nagorik Protinidhi Dal, a citizen’s group, yesterday urged the government to form a judicial probe body to identify the real perpetrators who led the February 28 attack on Begumganj’s Hindu community in Noakhali.
Though the local Jamaat-Shibir activists carried out the attack, some so-called allied intellectuals gave them directions from Dhaka, they told a press conference the dal organised in the capital’s Liberation War Museum after visiting the attacked area.
Associate Prof Robayet Ferdous of Dhaka University said the government was informed about the instigators and should arrest them immediately to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
Gono Oikya Convener Pankaj Bhattacharjee alleged that the government and local leaders of the ruling Awami League failed to prevent the attack.
He said the local administration failed to take any initiative when the Jamaat-Shibir activists, through a religious gathering under a banner of “Islami Samaj Kalyan Parishad” a few days ago, instigated local people to carry out the attack.
Assistant Prof Rajib Mir of Jagannath University said the miscreants’ main objective was to create panic and drive the Hindu community away so that they could occupy their assets.
Stating that the government should ban parties which are spoiling social harmony, the dal also urged the government to reestablish communal harmony and ensure proper assistance to the victims.
Workers’ Party of Bangladesh leader Bimal Biswas and Sammilito Samajik Andolon President Ajoy Ray also spoke on the occasion.
