Jamaat leader held in Rajshahi

Detectives arrested a Jamaat-e-Islami leader on Thursday at Puthia upazila of Rajshahi in connection with the attack on Sub-Inspector (SI) Jahangir Alam at Shalbagan April 1.

Arrestee Rafiqul Islam, 42, is the secretary of Kafuria union unit of Jamaat, and also an assistant professor of Islamic studies at Kathuria College, said Aslam Hossain, officer-in-charge, Sadar Police Station.

Detective Branch of police arrested him at the college around 11:00am Thursday, reports our Natore Correspondent.

SI Jahangir was brutally attacked by the activists of Jamaat and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, in Shalbagan of the city on April 1.

The arrest was made after reviewing some television footages of the brutal attack on the police man, said Krishna Mohan Sarkar, a sub-inspector of DB.

Islam was also an accused of vandalising and torching of Kafuria Kali Mandir on 28 February.

Our Rajshahi correspondent adds: Police detained two Shibir men — Dr Md Alam, a doctor of Islami Bank Hospital in the city, and Abdullah Al Mamun — at Nawdapara in the city around 2:45pm Friday in connection with the attack on SI Jahangir, said SM Moniruzzaman, superintendent of police in Rajshahi.
