Kamaruzzaman’s death penalty hailed

Five hundred Dhaka University teachers and different organisations in separate statements yesterday welcomed the verdict that sentenced Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman to death for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
The teachers in a joint statement said the verdict proves that justice has been served. They hoped for immediate execution of the verdict.
The signatories to the statement include Prof SM Imamul Haque, Dr Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, Dr ASM Maksud Kamal, Prof Md Yousuf Ali Mollah and Prof Gulshan Ara Latifa.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced Kamaruzzaman to death yesterday as five out of seven charges against him were proved.
Other organisations that expressed satisfaction over the verdict include Muktijoddha Sangsad, Amra Muktijoddhar Shontan and Shamprodaikota-Jongibad Birodhi Mancha.
Meanwhile, people of Chittagong city brought out jubilant processions to celebrate the verdict against Kamaruzzaman, adds our Chittagong correspondent.
Gonojagoron Mancha of Chittagong brought out a procession that began in front of the city’s press club and ended on the Chittagong Central Shaheed Minar premises.
Chittagong city Awami League brought out a procession that paraded throughout the city.
Shomprodaikota Birodhi Torun Udyog placed floral wreaths in Chittagong Central Shaheed Minar to pay homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War.
Sharif Chauhan, convener of the organisation, told The Daily Star that they showed their gratitude to the martyrs after hearing the news of Kamaruzzaman’s death penalty.
Different political and cultural organisations also held rallies in different upazilas to celebrate the verdict.
Meantime, law enforcers patrolled the city and upazilas to thwart any untoward situation. Extra forces were deployed in the upazilas considered to be vulnerable to violence.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) men were deployed in four upazilas — Satkania, Lohagara, Banshkhali and Patiya –, said Mohammad Iltutmish, additional superintendent of police (Chittagong south district zone).
