Lightning kills 8

Five people including a couple were killed and two others injured by lightning strike at three villages under Nasirnagar upazila in Brahmanaria during torrential rain yesterday morning, reports our correspondent.
The deceased were identified as Anwar Hossain, 17, son of Shahnewaz of Rampur village under Goalnagar union; Rokeya Begum, 9, daughter of Moti Mia of Guniauk Uttarpara village under Guniauk union; Alam Mia, 32, son of Abdus Sattar; Amena Begum, 28, and her husband Shantaj Mia, 35, son of Dhanu Mia, of Khakalia village under Dalkut union in the upazila.
According to locals and district relief and rehabilitation office sources, Anwar Hossain was killed while working at a paddy field at Beel Shapla. Lightning struck Rokeya Begum when she went to collect mangoes under a tree near her house while Alam Mia, Amena Begum and her husband Shantaj Mia died when walking in rain.
Meanwhile, a teenage boy was killed by lightning in Laksam upazila of Comilla yesterday.
He was identified as Sohag, 17, son of expat Abul Hossain of Mojunda village under Kandirpar union, reports our correspondent.
In Jhenidah, a day-labourer was killed as a lightning struck him at village Kharashuni under Sadar upazila on Wednesday night, reports our correspondent.
The deceased was identified as Siddiqur Rahman, 42, of Pabna district.
Monoranjon Biswas, house-owner of the day-labourer, said he hired four people of Kaliganj bazar for harvesting paddy.
On Wednesday, at around 7:30pm while working at a paddy field, a thunderbolt struck him, killing him on the spot.
