Mahmudur sent to jail

In this April 11 photo, law enforcers take Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of Bangla daily Amar Desh, to a court in the capital.

This April 11 photo shows law enforcers taking Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of Bangla daily Amar Desh, to a court hours into his arrest at the newspaper office in the capital.

Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of Bangla daily Amar Desh, was sent to jail after completion of his seven-day remand on Wednesday in connection with a case filed for publishing reports on Skype conversation.

The case was filed with the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Dhaka on December 13 last year.

Later, the case was registered as a regular one with Tejgaon Police Station on December 14.

Mahmudur was arrested on April 11, four months after he was sued, in line with a High Court directive, for publishing reports on Skype conversation between former International Crimes Tribunal chairman Justice Md Nizamul Huq and an expatriate Bangladeshi legal expert, Ahmed Ziauddin, last year.

The order asked the authorities concerned to send Mahmudur to jail on Wednesday when Tejgaon police produced Mahmudur before the Court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Shahidul Islam Faroque.

The court on April 11, directed the investigation officer of the case to produce Mahmudur before it in completion of the seven-day remand.

Meanwhile, Mahmudur appointed a group of lawyers to defend him.

During Wednesday’s hearing, the defence lawyers submitted two separate petitions before the court — one for facilitating Mahmudur with first class division and another for his proper treatment in jail.

The lawyers told the court that their client was subjected to torture during the interrogation at the office of Detective Branch of police.

After holding hearing on the petitions, the court ordered jail authorities to provide Mahmudur with proper treatment and first class division according to the jail code.

Earlier, the same court placed Mahmudur Rahman on six-day remand in connection with two separate cases for vandalising and torching vehicle on March 17 and 26.

Dark day in history of Bangladesh history. In no civilized working democracy such incident can happen. Beyond doubt that democracy is at great risk and authoritarian rule is spreading its wings.

Is it not one sided observation? As it has been seen,Amar Desh under his editorship has been very often publishing twisted news, fabricated reports & misrepresented pictures.Ethics of journalism consistent with democracy has been lost sight of.One has every right to be anti-establishment based on right journalism.but here it seems to be seriously lacking. However whatever the allegations brought against him,it is surely hoped that every case will be dealt with under due process of law.

In these censorious times, it is becoming increasingly difficult for telling the truth honestly. What now exists is the illusion of freedom, not the freedom of the press. The government does not want educated people capable of critical thinking. But then truth like the sun cannot be shut out for all times. The force of public opinion will unequivocally reveal the sentiments laden in their hearts, sooner or later.

Sir you are a teacher and if you say like a blind supporter of Jamaat Shibir then what will be the position of your students. Those who love you they will follow whatever you say right or wrong. Please sir as we believed you are an educated person, so please don’t behave otherwise. You are not critically thinking sir? What is the problem if anyone thinks critically of the government? But the deference must known by an educated person is critically thinks on his own but a journalist critically thinks for the nation and nation could believe on your thought or not but obviously nation gives priority to the journalist’s thinking. You must understand the difference between you and a journalist. Mr. MH not at all a journalist so he misused the power and subjected to punish. Please sir; don’t misguide the people. Thank you for your understanding; I hope you better understand. Joy Bangladesh. Allah Varasha.

You are right. I remember the Daily Star also previously wrote that he has been “sued for instigating militancy and fanaticism and spreading false information to create anarchy across the country”. Fictitious report was manufactured even on Kaaba (the most sacred site in Islam) to instigating militancy and spreading false information to create anarchy across the country. Let the court of the country to decide who did what. The whole world however knows well that media freedom and freedom of speech in Bangladesh are more abundant now than ever before.

I forgot to answer on another question that is “our millions dollars of garment orders are swinging out to India”. Yes you are right but for whom these orders went to India; it is because of Hartal and who did hartal it is you and yours supported parties BNP, Jamaat Shibir and their alliance. So don’t blame other for nothing look at you first and find out your fault first than go and looks to other and find out their fault this is Quran and Islam. Shouting for Islam but you are not following Islam funny you guys. Joy Bangladesh. Allah Varasha.

Mr Abul, can you tell me which news of Amar Desh was twisted? The fact is that he stood against the current, he watched the real facts behind the ‘Shahbagis’. Today when we see that our millions dollars of garment orders are swinging out to India, we can take a decision. We conclude that, this was to divide our country, our nation.

    • Elpadrinobc

What about the Kaaba story? Are you being selectively blind here?

    • Feline.grace

How did you watch the real facts behind “Mahmudur Rahman”/”Amar Desh” then? So childish that you people are chewing your tongue to explain how innocent Mahmudur Rahman is.

Are you writing under cover? Are you a regular reader of Daily Star? If you are under cover writer next time I will not respond on you. If you are regular reader of Star I hope you read the news of Gilab of Macca and other news of Amar Desh reprinted in Star.

We know the time of AL is up but you guys are trying to put them in power again. I think you don’t know that the people of Bangladesh don’t like Paki at any cost and now a day BNP proved in all respect that they are Paki supporters as well as war criminals supporter and as a result there is no other party except AL to vote; the countrymen have no choice. Joy Bangladesh. Allah Varasha.
