AL man dies as cops open fire

An Awami League man was killed and more than ten people were injured as police opened fire to disperse the clashing activists of Hefajat-e Islam and AL in Kamrangirchar area of the capital on the eve of the Islami party’s long march on Friday.

The victim was identified as Shaheed Hossain, 45, said Dhaka Medical College Hospital sources.

The clash erupted around 5:00pm when the students of Nuria Madrasa brought out a procession in support of Saturday’s Hefajat long march and the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student body of ruling AL, attacked them.

On information police rushed to the spot and at one stage opened fire and lobbed tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

Shaheed died during the incident.

He was brought dead to the hospital around 6:00pm, medical sources said.
