NGO Federation condoles deaths in Savar building collapse

The NGO Federation condoled the tragic death of garment workers in a building collapse at Savar on the outskirts of the capital on April 24.
The federation urged the government and the authorities concerned of the garment sector to ensure adequate protective measures against accidents, compulsory on-duty accident insurance policy, proper and free medical treatment of the injured, said a press release.
It also demanded adequate compensation and job opportunities for the members of the victims’ families.

Gonojagoron Mancha’s human chain, sit-in postponed

Gonojagoron Mancha has postponed its human chain programme, scheduled to be held in front of national parliament today, considering the recent tragic building collapse in Savar.
It also suspended its mass sit-in, to press a six-point demand including capital punishment for war criminals, scheduled to be staged before the law ministry yesterday, says a press release.
However, holding a workers’ rally tomorrow will remain unchanged, the release adds.

Two killed as trains run them over

A man was killed after a train ran him over in Srimangal upazila of Moulvibazar yesterday, reported a Moulvibazar correspondent.
The victim is Rabindra Roy, 50, of the upazila.
Srimangal Railway police said Dhaka-bound Jayantika Express ran him over at Srimangal Railway Station around 11:00am.
An unnatural death case was filed with Kamalganj Police Station.
In Gazipur, an unidentified man died after a train ran him over while he was crossing rail lines in Bhannara area at Kaliakoir upazila yesterday afternoon, our Gazipur correspondent added.

‘Arms dealer’ held in Ctg

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-7) detained an alleged illegal arms dealer with two guns at Patiya upazila in Chittagong yesterday afternoon.
The detainee is Mohammad Mahbub, 30, of the upazila, said Rab officials.
Acting on a tip-off, a Rab team conducted a drive in front of Palli Bidyut Samiti Office and detained him at tea stall in the area, said the officials, adding that they recovered two one barrel guns from his sack.
Filing of a case is under process.

Youth electrocuted to death in Ctg

A youth died after being electrocuted at his residence in Baluar Dighi area of Chittagong city yesterday.
The deceased is Md Mamun, 19.
A local named Ali rushed him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where doctors declared him dead, said CMCH sources.
Quoting Ali, the sources further said Mamun was alone at his house when he came in contact with a live electric wire while repairing power lines.
The body was sent to the college morgue for an autopsy.

10 robbers held in Tongi

Ten robbers were arrested in Tongi area of Gazipur early yesterday.
Tongi police also seized around 12 weapons, including pipe guns, locally-made pistols, Chinese knives and machetes, from their procession.
The gang on a pick-up van was heading for Dhaka from Kaliakoir when the police chased them and arrested them in the area.
During primary interrogation, the gang confessed that they robbed several shops and transformers from different places, said Tongi police.
A case was filed with Tongi Police Station.

College student hacked to death in Narayanganj

A college student was hacked to death while her mother was injured inside their house in Bandar upazila of Narayanganj early yesterday.
The deceased was Habiba Akther, 19, daughter of injured Falani Begum, 42, and Nasiruddin Nasu, an expatriate in Singapore.
Quoting their neighbours, Bandar Model police said the neighbours found Habiba lying on her bed and also rescued her mother. They broke open the door and entered as there was no response from inside the house at Kabiler Mor since the morning, Falani was rushed to a local clinic.
