Patuakhali Registrar’s Office

Office activities stopped at vulnerable building

Authorities stopped office work at the building that housed Patuakhali district registrar’s office and Sadar upazila sub-registrar’s office as cracks in the pillars, walls and roofs make the 43-year-old structure vulnerable to collapse any time.
“All official activities of Patuakhali District Registrar’s office and Sadar upazila Sub-Registrar’s office will remained stopped until shifting of the offices to another place,” said a notice served by District Registrar Md Abed Hossain at about 4:30pm yesterday.
The order was issued as per directives from the director general of registration over telephone yesterday, following visit of the executive engineer of Public Works Department on April 29, goes the notice.
Earlier on April 30, The Daily Star ran a report, saying that over 200 staff of the two offices as well as visitors to the dilapidated building were under life risk.
Besides, several lakhs of balam boi (land record books) kept in the building remained vulnerable to damage.
On Monday last, 106 staff including deed writers, searchers, and copyists submitted a prayer to the district registrar demanding immediate suspension of all activities in the risky building and steps to shift it to a safe place.
