Police seize tree but culprits flee scene

Police seized a big roadside mahogany tree worth about Tk 40 thousand from illegal fellers beside Lalmonirhat-Rangpur road at Mohendranagar in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila at dawn yesterday.
A police team led by ASP Mahfuzul Islam raided the spot when the tree fellers were sawing it beside the road, police said, adding that the culprits hurriedly left the scene sensing presence of the law enforcers.
The tree fellers were identified and will be arrested soon, police said.
An identified gang of numbering 10 to 15 people in the area are involved in felling big roadside trees beside Lalmonirhat-Rangpur road, Lalmonirhat-Kurigram road and three other roads in the area, people at Mohendranagar village alleged.
In last one year, the gang illegally felled at least 250 big mahogany trees, each worth Tk 40 thousand to 2.50 lakh, they said.
Tree felling is also rampant beside Lalmonirhat-Burimari road, Lalmonirhat-Fulbari road, Kaliganj-Chaparhat road, Doikhowa-Hatibandha road and Patgram-Jagotbar road in the district.
Active mostly during the night, the tree looters are very skilled at the task and it requires hardly an hour to fell down a big tree, locals said.
