Peaceful hartal ends in Kurigram, Noakhali sees stray violence

A six-hour shutdown ended peacefully in Kurigram while some stray violence marked a daylong hartal in Noakhali on Thursday.

Noakhali district BNP enforced the hartal protesting Monday’s arrest of Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque and the district unit party president Md Shahjahan.

Kurigram district unit of the main opposition party called the shutdown protesting the arrest of BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

The vehicular movement came to a halt as pickets put barricades on different roads of the town burning tyres and putting logs since the morning, reports our Noakhali correspondent.

Hartal supporters also set fire on the Laksham-Noakhali rail track near Maizdi Court Railway Station in the town.

They also burnt different newspapers excluding Bangla daily Amar Desh at Sonaimori College Gate area of the town in the morning.

However, a huge number of rickshaws were seen plying the district town road during the hartal hours.

All educational institutions and roadside shops remained closed.

Police rounded up four BNP activists and two Islami Chhatra Shibir men from different areas of the town.

No incident of violence was reported during the shutdown hours in Kurigram, reports our correspondent.

Vehicular movement was thin in the town.

No long distance buses were seen to enter or left the district town.

Awami League and its associate bodies brought out an anti-hartal procession in the town protesting the hartal in the morning.
