New Bhasani University VC

Dr Md Alauddin joined as the fifth vice-chancellor (VC) of Mawlana Bhasani Science and Technology (MBSTU) University at Santosh on Saturday. Earlier, he was pro-vice-chancellor and a professor of micro biology and bio chemistry at Chittagong University. The students, teachers, officials and employees of the university welcomed the VC in the morning. Later, the VC held a view exchange meeting with local journalists and assured that he would do his best for development of the 12-year-old university. He also sought cooperation of all.

5 policemen closed

Five policemen including an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) have been closed to Rangpur Police Lines on charge of failure to discharge duties during a robbery in Badarganj upazila on Saturday after noon. They were identified as Dulal Chandra Roy, assistant sub-inspector of Badarganj police station, Subal Dash, Mizanur Rahman, Azahar Ali and Khalilur Rahman constables of the same PS.

JCD leader arrested

A JCD leader was arrested by police on charge of tree felling at Satara village under Sherpur upazila of the district on Saturday evening. The arrestee was identified as Obaidur Rahman, 30, son of Shakhawat Hossain of the village and secretary of upazila unit JCD. OC of Sherpur PS Aminul Islam said that the accused cut two big eucalyptus trees on Mirzapur-Belghachi Road Satara village early Saturday. Police recovered the trees from a saw-mill, he said.

200 trees felled

Unidentified miscreants felled over 200 small eucalyptus trees at Kachina Joydev village Kalihati upazila on Friday night. The trees, worth about Tk 2 lakh 50 thousand, were found lying beside the paddy field where they were planted. The owners, however, could not identify the culprits or say any possible reason behind the incident. They later filed a general diary with Kalihati Police Station in this regard.
