4 get life for abduction

Additional District and Session Judge Md. Abdul Hamid yesterday sentenced four people to life term imprisonment and fined Tk 1 lakh each, in default, to suffer five years more in jail. The convicts are Al-Amin, Abul Hossen, Amirul Islam and Oli Ahmed of Panoir village in Mohongonj upazila. The case in brief is that, on January 11 in 2004 the four abducted the daughter of a man of same village and confined her to a room in Dhaka for three months. There they raped her during the period. After three months the girl managed to flee and returned home.

20 hurt as AL, BNP clash

At least 20 people, including policemen, were injured in sporadic clashes between the activists of BNP and ruling Awami League in Sonaimuri upazila of the district on Monday night. Fifteen shops were looted and vandalised during the incident. Locals said, BNP activists led by local leader Nazrul, launched an attack on a BCL activist triggering a chase and counter chase. Following information, Sonaimuri police went to the spot and brought the situation under control after firing several blank shots.

Man held with explosives

Police arrested a criminal along with two kilogram explosives at Navaran intersection on Jessore-Benapole road yesterday afternoon. The arrestee was identified as Faruk Biswas, 32, son of Taher Biswas in Balfield area of Benapole. Officer in-Charge (OC) Choyruddin of Sharsa police station said, on a tip-off, a team of police raided the area and arrested Faruk along with the explosives kept in a polythene bag.

Schoolteacher murdered

A schoolteacher was stabbed to death in Baoura Ghoshpara of Daulatpur union in Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj district on Monday night. The deceased, Nikhil Chandra Sarkar, 42, son of late Manindranath Chandra Sarkar of Baoura village was physical instructor at Kamarpara High School in the upazila. Police and the locals said, a gang of criminals killed Nikhil when he was returning home at about 11.30pm on Monday.

Press club executives

Patuakhali Press Club elected its new executives for 2013-2014 with Swapan Banarjee (the Bangladesh Somay) and Sohrab Hossain (The Daily Star) as president and secretary. The election was held at Patuakhali Press Club auditorium from 10am to 12pm while 25  members out of 28 cast their votes. Swapan got 11 votes while Sohrab got 13 votes the other elected members are — Zafor Khan (Jugantor), vice president, Muzahidul Islam Prince (Ekushey TV), joint secretary, Shankar Das (Prothom ALo), treasurer, Jalilur Rahman (BSS), office secretary, Md. Shahidul Alam (SATV), publication secretary. The executive members are Nirmol Kumar Rakhsmit (Ittefaq), Nikhil Chatarjee (Daily Sun), Faisur Rahman (ATN Bangla) and Zakaria Ridoy.
