Women Deliver

Social enterprises in Bangladesh win award for women development

Every year, in honor of International Women’s Day, Women Deliver — a global advocacy organisation bringing together voices from around the world to call for action to improve the health and well-being of girls and women, highlights the global progress being made for girls and women.
This year, voters selected from a list of 25 social enterprises that are changing the lives of girls and women around the world by addressing issues of health, gender equality, education, environmental sustainability and more. Among them, two social enterprises working in Bangladesh named New Incentives and Wedu have secured their position in final top 10 list.
New Incentives provides women living on less than $0.30/day the opportunity to earn an income on the “condition” that they invest in some aspect of their own human capital — health, education or other family or household needs.
Wedu hopes to catalyse the next generation of local women leaders by providing innovative financing options for university and lifelong support of mentors.
More than 13,500 votes were cast online to select New Incentives, Wedu and the other winners. Each finalist will receive a scholarship in the Women Deliver 2013 conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where they will compete in the first-ever Women Deliver Social Enterprise Challenge.
