Spelling Bee in Rajshahi

Spelling Bee in Rajshahi

Rajshahi will play host to the Divisional Round of The Daily Star Spelling Bee, which will air at 7:50pm on channel i tonight.
The competition began with around 150 spellers who qualified out of 14,591 in the division for the first part of the competition — the written part. Paramount School had the highest number of participants: 42.
Here, spellers would have to spell out 25 words in as many minutes with the four clues — English meaning, Bengali meaning, part of speech and use in sentence — on a piece of paper, given by the pronouncer. The words here were difficult, like “Chenille”, “Abscissa” and “Chiaroscuro”. There were three top scorers in this round with all three of them scoring 22 out of a possible 25.
From here, only 30 spellers were chosen for the second part of the competition — the oral part, which follows the orthodox Spelling Bee process. It would take two rounds of oral competition to select the top four spellers that would be representing the Rajshahi Division in the TV rounds. The words here also proved very testing with spellers having to spell words like “Abseil”, “Palooka” and “Autodidact”.
To see the extended highlights and find out the four qualifiers that would make it to the TV Round tune in to Channel i at 7:50pm tonight.
