Stray violence marks BNP’s Sylhet hartal

The opposition BNP enforced a six-hour hartal across Sylhet district yesterday to protest the disappearance of Sylhet district BNP president Ilias Ali on April 17 last year.
The shutdown was marked by vandalism of four auto-rickshaws and a pickup van, blast of three crackers, and some small processions in the city, said police and witnesses.
Primarily, the district BNP called a daylong hartal but reduced it to half-day till 12:00pm for the namaz-e-janaza of the caretaker of the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA).
Police arrested two activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) of MC College for “violent activities” during hartal in the city, while another JCD man was fined Tk 4,000 by a mobile court in Beanibazar upazila for an attempted attack on an auto-rickshaw. z
As the hartal progressed, a few vehicles, including some auto-rickshaws and rickshaws, were on the city streets. There was no movement of inter-upazila or inter-district buses.
