Speakers on the opening day of the three-day celebrations of the 152nd birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore and 100 years of his Nobel Prize win, reiterated appeals to establish a Rabindra University at Shelaidah Kuthibari, the bard’s family estate.
Sultana Tarun, lawmaker of Kushtia-4, inaugurated the programme as chief guest. She said the government has repeatedly committed that it would set up a university at the Kuthibari area.
Establishing a university based on the works and philosophy of Rabindranath is essential, as he is considered the symbol of our cultural heritage, said the speakers. What’s more, a suitable site for the institute of higher learning has been identified, they added.
With Syed Belal Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of Kushtia, in the chair, the programme was addressed, among others, by Kushtia Police Superintendent Mofiz Uddin; Kumarkhali upazila chairman Abdur Rouf; Kushtia district Awami League general secretary Asgor Ali; and Ankit Sureka, Khulna regional officer of Banglalink (the sponsor of the event).
Eminent folklorist, Professor of Bangla at Islamic University, Dr. Abul Ahsan Choudhury, was the chief discussant at the event. Dr. Zamir Uddin, Professor of Bangla at Kushtia Government College, also took part in the discussion.
On the occasion, the Kuthibari has been decorated colourfully, as a huge number of Rabindra devotees milled around.
A village fair has also been organised as part of the event.
