LAND DISPUTE BETWEEN 2 SPINNING MILLS

Worker killed in gunfight in Gazipur

A spinning mill worker was killed and 50 others were injured as the workers of two spinning mills clashed over a land dispute in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur Friday.

The deceased, Abdus Salam, 35, was a worker of Arif Spinning Mill.

There was a long-standing dispute over the land between Arif Spinning Mill and Gulshan Spinning Mill in Nagarhata village, said Amir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sreepur Police Station.

Friday’s clash ensued when around 500 workers of Arif Spinning Mill equipped with lethal weapons and firearms tried to grab the land, now under control of the other mill, forcefully around 6:30am, said the OC.

The mills area turned into a battlefield when the security guards of Gulshan Spinning Mill opened fire.

Salam was killed on the spot, the police official said.

On information, Gazipur Industrial Police rushed in and brought the situation under control around 7:00am, reports our correspondent in Gazipur.

Police picked up three security guards of Gulshan Spinning Mill — Ziaul Haque, 40, Abul Khayer, 50, and Nazrul Islam, 48, — for their alleged involvement in the incident.

A double-barrel gun and a shotgun were seized from the spot, the OC said.

The body was sent to the Gazipur General Hospital for an autopsy while the injured were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital and other local hospitals.
