Redefining the Boundaries of Financial Knowledge: Financial Quiz 2011

Muhammad Saimum Hossain

Amongst a catastrophic environment in the financial sectors, with the country's capital markets being in the midst of nowhere, the need for top-notch finance administrators is felt with even more urgency. In such circumstances, with a view to deciding on the finance prodigies from among around 600 currently enrolled students, the Department of Finance, Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka recently hosted the first season of knowledge-battle in the arena of finance, entitled the Financial Quiz Competition 2011.

The Department, well known for producing quality finance majors since 1974, has been the country's premium institution in nurturing and developing mavericks in the field of financial services. In continuation to this legacy of excellence, the Financial Quiz Competition 2011 gathered the very best minds of financial talent to explore beyond the limited scope of classroom understanding.

From a massive pool of around 350 rising business graduates who registered for the first line of battle, the brainteaser round produced the top five 'geeks' from each batch and ultimately 25 of them could make it to the finale. As the first cut-off point in the war, this round decided the champs for the next round by minuscule margins.

For the grand finale, the 25 finance gurus were shuffled and five teams -- Fama, French, Modigliani, Miller, and Sharpe, were structured and named after five of the gurus in the financial turf. This time the rivalry was going to be even sturdier!

Then came the judgment day, March 27, when both the students and the academia congregated in the TSC Auditorium in a festive spree. The finalists were up for a fierce struggle to safeguard the top positions. From the history of Dhaka Stock Exchange to the global economic meltdown to the latest Bangladesh capital market catastrophe, the going-to-be finance prodigies were leaving no issues untouched!

Some of the big-bosses of the country's financial sector -- Professor Dr. Jamal Uddin Ahmed, Dean, Faculty of Business Studies; Professor Dr. A. A. Mahboob Uddin Chowdhury, Chairman, Department of Finance; Professor Dr. M. Khairul Hossain, Chairman, Investment Corporation of Bangladesh (ICB); Professor Salahuddin Ahmed Khan, Ex-CEO, Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE); and Professor Dr. Mahmood Osman Imam were present at the venue to glorify the evening. Professor Dr. A. H. M. Habibur Rahman, Founder Chairman, Department of Finance, and Farzana Lalarukh, Associate Professor and Convener of the competition were also present among others.

The grand finale was divided into three segments with differing dimensions in questions -- the buzzer segment with multiple choice questions, visuals, and the rapid-fire part comprising of questions to be answered within time span of only 30 seconds. In the first segment for every wrong guess the students will be penalised but there were no penalty in the other two segments.

From the five finalist teams, three outsmarted the other two and after a nail-biting combat of financial comprehension, the department had its best deserving the highest accolades-- team Modigliani crowning the Championship title, team Sharpe harnessing the First Runner-up trophy, and team Miller ensuring the Second Runner-up label.

This first ever in-house event of this sort, arranged by the department, surely encouraged the future CEOs to go for further heights in this very imperative section of business and commerce, which is often called the “bloodline of business”. This congregation of the finance wonder kids concluded with the aspiration of breaking the boundaries of contemporary knowledge.
