Photography in the recent years has gained much popularity. The idea is not just to click away and capture candid moments but to enable an individual to capture emotions and thoughts as well. Photography has changed its face from a simple hobby to a more substantial form, known as profession. However, be it an activity one chooses to do in his free time or a career, photography is like an addiction. To celebrate this love for photography, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Photographic Society will be organising their 9th Annual Photography Exhibition at Drik gallery, Dhanmondi, Road 27 from October 12-14, 2011. The exhibition will begin in the afternoon at 3 pm and continue till 8 pm in the evening for these three consecutive days.
The goal of BUET-PS has always been a noble one. It wishes to provide a foundation for all the BUET students who are interested in photography and to inspire them to enjoy photography as a passion. BUET PS is an active club and the dedicated members of the club who have taken the initiative to organise this exhibition are, President of BUET PS, Fahim Hossain, Vice-President Farhan Quaiyum, General Secretary Aneek Mustafa Anwar, Organising Secretary Shamir Bin Karim, Treasurer Joy Murshed, Exhibition and Publications Secretary Rafee Musabbir and Office Secretary Hridoy Tanveer. In addition the executive members from the different batches are, Asifur Rahman Ratul, Tahmid Syed Abtahi and Javed Miandad.
“The photography club (known as BUET PS) organises this annual event every year. In the middle there was a gap for a few years, but lately the performance has increased,” explained Fahim Hossain, President of BUET PS. He added, “Most of the pictures are taken during photo walks which are organised round the year. So the students do not have to spend time away from studies during these exhibitions.
Different activities have been planned out for this three day programme. The photo exhibition will be an exciting segment where the works of 34 participants and 51 pictures will be displayed. Apart from the photo exhibition, there will be photo addas, photo workshop and photo discussion sessions with prominent photographers of the country. Hossain on this note says, “The photo addas and intense discussion sessions with the greatest photographers of the country will be helpful in many ways. This will encourage the newcomers and those interested in photography to want to experiment with the camera.”
On the second day, there will be a special exhibition, displaying the photographs of students from different batches. These will be the representation of individual projects. Some will present a heart aching photo story while others will showcase solitary moments.
The members of the club are expecting a great crowd. Aneek Mustafa Anwar, General Secretary of the club says, “Last year, the turn out was record breaking. We are hoping that history would repeat itself.” In addition, “Through this exhibition, the youth of the country and in particular the students of BUET will be motivated to join our club. This will show that our institution is not just a place that is devoted to technical study but it is also the hub of budding talent.”
Taking a sneak peak on the exhibition, some of the photographs are a must view. These should not be missed at any cost. Particulars include a shoot in Bhutan of the Buddhist monks, a picture of a barber's shop and a chess board.
Each of these pictures has a character of its own and has a story to tell which is based on brilliant concepts created by the photographer. Some say a tale of harmony; some speak poetry and others illustrate a state of frenzy. The remaining photographs are yet to unravel during these three days of exhibition, so, if one enjoys the sheer pleasure which photography gives, then this exhibition is a must visit!
