Fashion and fusion

UNITED Showbiz, a concern of United Production, kicked off its inauguration with an evening of fashion and fusion on May 21 at the Radisson Water Garden Hotel.

The show opened up with a performance by the band Pentagon, which got the crowd grooving to popular hits of the 70's, 80's and 90's.

This was followed by speeches by Chief Guest Abdul Salam, Chairperson, ETV, and Md Ferdous Ahmed, CEO, United Showbiz. In his speech, the CEO thanked the sponsors behind the venture, which included the Square group, Mercedes Benz, Pepsi, Europe Cars, Skyview, Thai Fashion Gallery, Azad Art Hall, and media partners ETV, Radio Today, Shomokal, and Eyeclick. The show's host Azra then invited participating designers Kaniz Afroz Shumi and Shabana Ali to join the Chief Guest and the CEO in inaugurating the event.

The fashion show was kicked off with a collection by Chondona, which featured ethnic and fusion wear for both men and women. The men's line featured sherwanis, kurtis and jackets, while the women's line had a collection of shalwar kameez, kurtis and tunics, mainly in tussar, raw silk and cotton, reinventing the Mughal influence in a contemporary outlook. Colourful and trendy, the collection was geared to the young urban individual.

Next up was fashion boutique Ogaan, which featured evening dresses, kurtis and tunics for women. Ogaan brings in the work of fresh Indian designers like Nisha Beri, Kavita Vineeta, Mogra, Aza, Keva, Kkru Shailender Gupta, Chhuti Raja, and Joya Rathod. The collection for the United Showbiz Gala Night featured flowy, full-skirted kameezes and kurtis, teamed with churidars, in bright jewel colours. The silhouettes varied from the empire waist to the princess line, while some of the pieces featured asymmetrical hemlines.

The final collection for the evening was by Shabana Ali, who opened with a line of bright chiffon saris for evening wear. Heavily embellished, with delicate embroidery and brocade borders, the chiffons were in bright blues and deep reds, inspired by the colours of twilight. Next came the muslin line, featuring hand and machine embroidery. Sheer fabrics are currently all the rage in this Sub-continent, and muslins pretty much fit the bill. Shabana's muslins featured soft pastel colours with dazzling embroidery. She concluded her showing with her jamdani line. Keeping in mind the summer heat, the line sported subdued pastel and neutral shades, with intricate zardosi work.

The make-up for the entire fashion show was done by Persona, while Quamrul was responsible for the choreography. The evening concluded with the audience rocking out to the beats of DJ Rahat.
