6 Foods That Can Help Soothe a Headache

When a headache strikes, you may run through your usual routine: Turn out the lights, lie down and pop a pain pill. But certain foods may ease and prevent headaches.

Baked Potato: The side you love with dinner could help soothe your aching head, especially if your headache is alcohol-related. A baked potato (with the skin) is one of the most impressive sources of potassium, containing a whopping 721 mg.

Watermelon: Dehydration is a major cause of headaches. So instead of popping a pain pill next time your head throbs, consider reaching for water-rich foods, like watermelon. Other foods with high water content include berries, cucumber, melon, soups, oatmeal, tomatoes and lettuce.

Coffee: One cup of coffee may be helpful for decreasing hangover-related headaches, but drinking coffee throughout the day would not be the best choice for curing a headache.

Whole-Grain Toast: By reducing energy to the brain and causing dehydration, these low-carbohydrate diets can trigger headaches. When one hits, consider reaching for healthy carbs, such as those found in whole-wheat bread, oatmeal, fruit or yogurt.

Almonds: To increase your magnesium intake, try consuming magnesium-rich foods such as bananas, dried apricots, avocados, almonds, cashews, brown rice, legumes and seeds.

Spicy Salsa: Spicy foods such as salsa and hot peppers may help you snap back from a headache faster. Depending on the type of headache, spicy foods may be helpful.

A winter dream

You know what's on my mind these days? Random picnics for one --- lazing under the sunny, wintry sky, listening to the chirping and cooing of birds; yes, pretty much doing things that are almost impossible for an urbanite these days. Well, dreams are on my mind; I am fantasising and making plans for lots of activities with just my family.

For instance, to enjoy the mild November chill I want to surprise my family with a small barbeque night come next full moon. Nothing fancy; I will light my candles and my kerosene oil lanterns and place them on my small green patch on the rooftop, the tingling sound of the wind chimes and the appetising aroma of some roasted sweet corns enriching the enchantment while I bake some potatoes -- reason enough for my computer zombie family to join me. I will make good use of the beef T-bone steaks I kept aside during Qurbani Eid to celebrate the family togetherness.

Just a family affair, the three of us listening to our favourite music, counting the stars, enjoying my lovely winter blooms, watching our greedy dog go wild over the bbq bones -- silly things like that. Are there too many colours in my daydreams, I wonder?

If I can pull this off successfully I might call my friends over for a big one; but that is later at some point this winter.

For now I just want activities with my family only. A selfish thought maybe, but come to think of it I give everyone time except my loved ones. So this winter I intend to do random fun stuff with them. Maybe because my rooftop gives me immense pleasure and calms my nerves or because it is the farthest I can go with traffic and work always posing as hindrances; but whatever the reason, my family outings will all be planned here -- on top of my world.

A mild, winter Friday morning I will have my breakfast there with pithas only. Chitoi, the flat rice cake, is my all-time favourite, soaked in milk and jaggery over night or just the plain cake with a dollop of butter and omelettes with tomatoes and mint on the side. Then a cup of tea of freshly brewed Tulsi leaves from my kitchen garden patch. I think this ought to be heavenly.

I could have a picnic lunch as well; stir-frying fresh vegetables from the garden should be amusing for a change.

Early mornings and late evenings are the best times to indulge these simple pleasures of life that I don't get a chance to enjoy anymore. I hear these family times reinforce bonding and ties, recuperate minds and most importantly, make you fall in love with each other all over again. A game of Scrabble, or cards or Monopoly or even Ludo adds excitement, but simply chatting with each other and laughing does wonders.

We are becoming so mechanical these days that it has become impossible to break free from daily routine; even children can hardly catch a breath with exams, schools, and teachers and not to forget the all-important social networking activities and computer games.

I have recently been feeling that we must shed the facade of being modern urbanites and go back to the basics of farming or gardening, taking life easy, grabbing one assignment and producing quality work rather than always calculating how much this will add to the bank balance.

You see, the gist of all these cravings and dreaming is that we are so busy securing the future that we don't realise how the present is slipping away. So, this winter I will try to keep my family warm by loving them even more; fingers crossed on that note.

Kay Kraft's winter collection

As it does every year, Kay Kraft has brought out a winter collection with new cuts and stitches, different types of shawls, jackets, scarves, mufflers, fatuas, panjabis, T-shirts, tops and ponchos, etc..

Khadi and cotton are the predominant materials used for the collection. The shawls have been done in khadi and ikkat, and the designs used on them are appliqué and print. Attractive ponchos have added a new dimension. The fusion of khadi and silk materials add a different look in the panjabis. Skin print, machine embroidery, handwork, tie-dye and karchupi are used to ornament the dresses.
