Having fried food from outside might not always be safe. When you think of frying French fries at home, what is the first essential ingredient that comes to mind? A frying pan nearly full of oil.

Frying foods at home takes a lot of time and energy. So, has anyone ever thought about making these dishes in a short time by using less oil and with low fat? Well, Philips has come up with what could be a revolutionary product called Airfryer -- where air is the new oil.

One can indulge in all types of fried foods with up to 80% less fat. And retain the taste without adding additional oil during the cooking process.

Features of Airfryer
In the Airfryer, 500 grams of fresh fries actually need half a tablespoon of oil to cook 'for good taste'. In terms of fat content, this is much better than deep-frying chips.

'Rapid Air technology' works by using hot air and high-speed air circulation to cook. It fries food using a combination of hot air circulation and a grill element. There are some more special features of this unique product: Its cord storage system keeps the kitchen's surface neat and tidy. Its integrated air filter keeps the kitchen fresh and clean.

It has a food separator to fry more than one dish at the same time. Its removable drawer and food basket is safe for easy cleaning in dish-washer. It has an adjustable temperature function that controls the perfect cooking result.

The Airfryer has an extra safe cool wall body. 1425 Watt Power of the Airfryer costs only Tk.5.7 per hour in terms of electricity consumption. Food capacity of the Airfryer is 0.8kg. Temperatures can be set manually starting from 80°C to 200°C. A recipe book with lots of delicious food preparation methods is included with Airfryer.

The Airfryer is simple to use -- the cooking basket has a handle that's easy to slide out and lift. Its plastic exterior is easy to wipe over and the non-stick pan is a breeze to clean.

By pulling out the basket during cooking time one can easily check if the food is cooking properly or not. The Airfryer not only fries chips but also different snacks like spring rolls, nuggets and fish fingers.

Starting from various dishes of meat and poultry like schnitzel/drumsticks, chicken legs, crumbed chicken tenderloins and chicken balls to fish items like fish fry can be made using the Airfryer. Even sweet snacks can be made by the Airfryer.

The Philips Airfryer can be purchased in seven of their showrooms in Dhaka and Chittagong. The six showrooms in Dhaka are located at Uttara, Gulshan-1, Gulshan-2, Gulshan Tower near Gulshan-2 circle, Sonargaon Jonapad, Dhanmondi road 27 and the solitary Philips showroom in Chittagong is located at Chittagong Dampara. There are two models of the Airfryer available at these showrooms -- the Airfryer HD 9220/40 can be purchased for Tk.26,800 while the HD 9220/20 can be bought for Tk. 29,00.

Adopting a Pet

Sagir U Ahmed

Hi, I would like to own a dog and I have a few questions for you. What should I look for in a healthy puppy, I mean, other than looking at the papers et al; physically and behaviourally, what should I look for? I am really interested to purchase a German Shepherd puppy and I have paid a couple of visits to the Katabon pet market but I don't know how to bargain for the price because the prices vary tremendously from shop to shop. In four different shops, the asking price for GS puppies which looked quite similar to me were Tk.6000, Tk.8000, Tk. 15000 and even Tk.40000. The puppies appeared almost the same to me, all very frisky and lively. Money is of course a huge factor, thus I am totally unwilling to buy a Tk.40000 puppy, so is it wise to go for a 6-8 thousand taka German Shepherd puppy? Do you recommend any source for a healthy puppy at a reasonable price?

Jassim Hossain

Dear Mr. Jassim Hossain,
For both the individual and family owner, the German Shepherd puppy is an excellent pet since they are athletic, energetic and bond easily. The breed is also trained for search and rescue roles as well as to be police dogs. When you are choosing between German Shepherd puppies for sale, you should consider the health and breed standards. Set up an initial meeting with your puppy once you know which one you are considering buying. Carefully observe how the puppy reacts to your voice and touch, make sure they are eager to make friends and are affectionate. If you are buying from a breeder, you should ask to see both of the parents of the puppy you are considering. You will want to carefully observe how the parents react to you as a stranger, as they shouldn't have any signs of unwanted aggression. The temperament of the parents will be present in the litter. You also want to make sure the parents move easily and remain unencumbered due to health reasons. Ask for a vet's certification for the puppy's parents.

If you would like to own a large dog, make sure that your home fits the dog's personality. Do you have enough space in your house? A big, loud dog in a small house could drive everyone crazy. Do you have a backyard? Puppies have lots of energy and they need space to exercise. Having a backyard also allows you to train your puppy to urinate outside. Ensure that you have enough resources. Finally, ask yourself if you have the time to care for your puppy. A new puppy needs lots of care and training for the first few months of its life. It will always need at least one good walk every day.

Before you buy a puppy, you need to make sure that it's healthy. Here are some things for you to keep in mind: a healthy puppy will be alert and interested in what is going on around him/her. Healthy puppies are playful and happy to be handled. A healthy puppy's tummy should feel soft when you press it gently. Its tail and bottom should be clean and dry. The eyes should be clear, bright and open.

In addition to the above points, it is important to check your puppy's overall health and condition. Taking the time to look over your puppy will help you to spot any possible health problems that could be developing, and you will be able to protect other animals in your home from parasites or illnesses.

The physical appearance of your puppy can offer a lot of information about the puppy's health. Begin by looking at the puppy's weight and hair coat quality. Healthy puppies should have their weight distributed evenly around the body. A puppy that has a swollen belly, but looks bony in the shoulders, hips and back, could be infected with parasitic worms. A healthy puppy will have a bright, shiny coat. If the coat looks dull, patchy or seems to be thinning in areas, this could indicate a nutritional deficiency or a parasitic skin infection. However, it is difficult for a pet lover to identify the potential clinical problems.

A puppy's attitude and behaviour should be examined. Your puppy's overall attitude will also tell you a lot about its health. If the puppy appears depressed, listless and lethargic, then it could be ill.

If you notice any potential problems with your puppy, take your puppy straight to your local veterinarian and get all the de-worming programme and vaccination done before you bring it home. Parasites, diseases and illnesses can drastically affect a puppy's health in a short amount of time. With timely medical treatments, your puppy will be back to tip-top shape in no time. An important and common disease for the German Shepherd is Hip dysphasia. And it is a genetic condition so it can be passed on to the litters.

Whether you get the puppy from Katabon Pet Market or elsewhere you need to check the quality first and the price will follow accordingly. Each person has a bargaining style. You should develop one of your own. Although all the puppies appeared almost the same to you, there are differences. You said that money is a huge factor to you, but think twice before adopting a pet because you need to provide basic needs of any pet as a pet lover and for the wellbeing of that pet. As you have asked me for a source for a healthy puppy at a reasonable price, my answer is irrespective of source let's buy all pets suffering in different places of Bangladesh according to our affordability -- and let them enjoy a happy life. Although impossible but let's wish a sweet home for all homeless dogs, cats, rabbits, cage birds or captive exotic animals.
