Villagers share views on UP budget in Satkhira

It was a different day for the residents of Romjan Nagar union in Shyamnagar upazila in the district as over 2,000 enthusiastic people took part in a daylong 'open budget session' held at Bhetkhali Bazar in the union adjacent to the Sundarbans yesterday.

At the unique programme, first of its kind in the area, the participants discussed around Tk 20 lakh budget of Romjan Nagar Union Parishad for fiscal year 2008-09.

NGOs DANIDA and Shushilon organised the session.

UP Chairman Sheikh Alamgir Haidar, who presided over the session, replied to questions from villagers and received suggestions on how the money should be spent.

Shyamnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Dilip Kumar Banik was the chief guest while Shyamnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdur Razzak and Khairul Alam were special guests.

Lauding the local government body leaders for direct interaction with people at the open budget session, the chief guest said it would greatly help to ensure accountability of the local government body and transparency in its activities.

Local elites and representatives from villages in the union urged the government to allocate more funds for local governments to enable union parishads undertake more development projects independently.

Such programmes will make people aware of their rights, they said.

Urging people to cooperate with local government leaders to implement development programmes, the UP chairman said he would try his best to make his union a 'model' for the country.
