One held for throwing acid on Suma

Police yesterday arrested the prime accused of a case filed for throwing acid on 14-year-old Suma Akhter.

Assistant Sub-inspector Mofazzal Hossain of Rupganj Police Station said Abdul Jalil, a listed criminal and the main accused of the case, was held in the city's Kanchpur at around 8:00pm.

Abdul Jalil, a father of two, wanted to marry Suma Akhter, daughter of Hossain Molla of Rupganj Upazila in Narayanganj.

When Suma's mother refused to give Jalil permission to marry her daughter, Jalil along with his associates Faruq and Kalam threw acid on Suma on July 5, said Suma's father in the first information report.

Faruq and Abu Kalam are on the run.

The arrest was made a day after The Daily Star ran a report on the incident.
