Rainwater preservation

Citizens of Dhaka are suffering due to the present water crisis. Still, some respite can be found through an easy but convenient method - preserving rainwater. Here are a few important points in this regard:

1. Rainwater is absolutely pure. So it is safe to drink preserved rainwater even without boiling. But, if gas is available, it is best to first boil the water and then drink it.

2. During the first 15 minutes of rain, dust and sand particles, gas molecules and also germs are amassed by the rainwater and washed away.

Therefore water should be collected after at least 15 minutes.

3. In heavily industrialized and densely populated areas such as

Hazaribagh, Old Dhaka, rainwater should be gathered after 30 minutes.

4. There has been no report of acid rain (PH less than 5.5) in Dhaka city, yet. So rainwater can be used without any treatment.

5. A clean pitcher or a jug can be used to collect rainwater. The pot should be placed in an open space so that water dripping from trees or rooftops does not spoil the pure water.

6. Rainwater can also be used to wash clothes or dishes. In fact, soaps and detergents work better in soft rainwater than in hard water containing metal ions.

7. Short and long-term measures should be taken from now on. Constructing rainwater-harvesting mechanism in all new buildings can be made obligatory by the government.

Preserving rainwater on a mass scale can definitely lessen the present water crisis. I hope the government will also be interested in collecting this no cost water.

We always blame our government for

all the crisis we face in our everyday life. Our city is getting unlivable more and more as days are passing. Unless we go for short term solution like 'Rainwater preservation' mentioned here, we are sure to suffer more.We need to respond actively to the crisis issues. Otherwise, unlimited sorrows are waiting for us in the near future.
